FILMED IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE
Conceived to entertain, captivate and inspire audiences today, as Švenk’s original did in Terezín, The Last Cyclist enjoyed a critically acclaimed run in 2013 at the West End Theater in New York. Neil Genzlinger of The NY Times said of this absurdist comedy, “Watching ‘The Last Cyclist,’ you realize that this performance is being presented for an audience that isn’t there. You and your fellow theatergoers are its stand-in. This isn’t theater as entertainment; it’s theater as a chance to bear witness.”
In August 2017, the writer Naomi Patz and the director Edward Einhorn came together again and, over a four-day period, filmed the remount of the production (with nearly all of its original cast), before a live audience at the legendary experimental theater La MaMa.
